Abstract

Lake Sentani is the biggest lowland lake in Papua and one of freshwater ecosystem conservation priorities in Papua. The lake has highest endemism, however it faces high pressure of human activities in the lake. Habitat alteration and introduction of exotic species are two of the most threaten factors in the lake. Therefore, this program aims to improve knowledge of Lake Sentani, its biotas and its threats to students of Culture School of Sentani, Jayapura Regency in Hobong Village and develop conservation campaign tools to increase people awareness for the lake conservation. Methods used were seminar and video campaign. Students have limited knowledge about the lake. They do not aware about threats of introduced species and habitat lateration becasue of waste in the lake. They have also known more on introduced fish species than endemic and native species. However, they could recognize fish species through picture, which showed in the seminar, based on local name. Video campaign was developed to increase people awareness on Lake Sentani which is distributed via social media. Limited knowledge on Lake Sentani should be increased through serious and regular campaign program in printed and electronic media.
