PROSES KOGNITIF MAHASISWA CALON GURU DALAM MEMBUKTIKAN GRUP DITINJAU DARI GAYA KOGNITIF

This research aims to describe student teachers’ cognitive process in proving group in terms of field independent and field dependent cognitive style. The subjects of this research were two student teachers of mathematics education major, one of them is a student with field independent cognitive style while the other one is a student with field dependent cognitive style. Furthermore, this research is a descriptive qualitative with test and interview toward research subject as data collection method.
This research result is subject with field independent cognitive style in cognitive process of
remembering about group, the nature of group, and abelian group. In cognitive process of understanding, the subject explained the complete definition of group by set and binary operation, thus mentioned some examples of binary operation. In the component of cognitive process of applying, the subject explained steps and proved abelian group, every detailed step including enclosed nature, associative element of identity, invers, and commutative. On the other hand, the subject with field dependent in cognitive process remembering, recalled abelian group according to the given exercise without mentioning the others. In
understanding cognitive process, the subject explained the definition of group without stating binary operation. However, group’s nature were still explained. In the cognitive process component of applying, the subject proved abelian group by proving the group first and proved commutative nature then. Nevertheless, in proving associative nature, there was a miscalculation.Â
