Abstract

This study aimed to describe the profile of probabilistic thinking of the high school students in
solving probability problems. This qualitative research is a case study. The subject in this study was a student at the 11 ð‘ ð‘¡Â grade in science class, which was chosen based on the mathematical ability test. The  instrument used in this study was Problem Solving Tasks. Then the subject was interviewed based on her work on the task. The results indicated that in solving the task, the student responded in non-statistical way with representativeness heuristic strategy by using attribute substitution. The student only was able to list some of the probability. In relation with dual-process theory, the student’s probabilistic thinking was categorised by System 1 thinking that is using intuition.

Key words : probabilistic thinking, probability problems, dual-process theory, representativeness heuristics, intuition.
