The prevalence of mothers who gave exclusive breastfeeding based on RISKESDAS 2013 is only about 42%. In Papua, The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding is only about 46.33%. Several studies suggested that social support is essential in term of mother’s decision making. Thus, community health workers (KADER) hold important roles to support and improve the prevalence of breastfeeding in Papua. KADER tend to get training from Health Department regarding maternal and child health. However, not many KADER in Papua have a change to refresh their knowledge since being KADER is not their primary job. For that reason, this study was conducted to determine KADER’s knowledge toward breastfeeding in order to preparing them as a breastfeeding peer supporter. This was a preliminary study. Using pre experimental study,a one group pre-test and post-test were conducted for 15 KADER in Wahno District of Jayapura.
Knowledge toward breastfeeding was measured before and after an interactive training. This study found that the mean level of KADER’s knowledge toward breastfeeding before training was 7.20, with SD = 2.957, while the mean level after training was 9.73, with SD = 4.267. The result showed that there was a significant difference between the KADER’s knowledge before and after the interactive training (p=0.001). Based on the result, we found that although KADER is assign to help improving maternal and child health, it is crucial for them to get trainings continually in order to refresh or disseminate new knowledge. Moreover, this preliminary research found that training KADER about breastfeeding is crucial before preparing them to get breastfeeding peer support training.
