Abstract

The sociodemographic conditions of university students residing in dormitories place them at considerable risk of contracting tropical infectious diseases. Economic burden, limited access to healthcare services, and substandard sanitation in living environments may collectively contribute to an elevated risk of tropical disease transmission. This study aimed to describe the sociodemographic characteristics and disease history profile of students residing at the Nabire Dormitory in Jayapura City. This study employed a descriptive quantitative design. The sample consisted of 58 students residing at the Nabire Dormitory, selected through total sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews using a questionnaire encompassing demographic variables and disease history. Descriptive analysis of the studied variables revealed that the majority of respondents were in the late adolescent age group (94.8%), male (91.4%), had parents employed as farmers (74.1%), and were financially supported by their parents for educational expenses (86.2%). With respect to disease history over the preceding 12 months, malaria was the most prevalent condition (60.3%), followed by pulmonary tuberculosis (5.2%). The persistently high prevalence of malaria among dormitory students underscores the urgent need for targeted health interventions, particularly structured health education programs aimed at enhancing students' knowledge and improving health-maintaining behaviors.
